I can email anyone who wants a full copy of it, without paying for it:

https://www.sciencedirect[...]7619300805

I have a couple other academic research papers on the topic that I wrote, but have not yet published.

I frankly put them on the shelf when the Pandemic hit.

Let me Confess, or share, my schools, and networks, have had their own troubles.

I have arranged for the surrender of some of my black belts,
For instance, for domestic abuse,
So they would not be arrested with dogs,
Nor a fire fight,
As they were known fighters, and/or armed.

I do NOT love their sins, or demons.
I hate their demons, for those demonic behaviors.
I arranged their peaceful surrender to law enforcement.

But, in making this post, and remembering them, I will right now, again, reach out to them, yes them, exactly.
Ask them how they are doing, and if they are living right, staying sober, and ignoring and starving their demons.
This is not the same as me putting them in teaching roles, or class participations,
Nor the opposite, abandoning them to their demons,
Nor treating them now, as if I was a demon, sent by Hell to torture them.
Nor hiding their crimes, or misdeeds, or sins.
Last time I checked, that is part of this business, that is our demographics.
No one steps in a boxing ring, or fighting pit, or an "octagon" that is not fighting their own demons.

I did not "promote" them a priori, knowing they would do these things.
Having cornered them all of their lives,
I will do one more round, with them,
Trying to steer them back to the Light,
Even if other dynamics have changed, thereby.

Others went to protests, and acted like criminals, and have gotten themselves arrested.

I better help steer the students I trained, back to the Light, and away from Darkness, if I made them skilled at violence, ought'n I?

HOWEVER, I will say the same things to you, that I said to my Jiu-Jitsu student Professor Steve Hall,

Those 30 years ago...

We are not therapists.
We are coaches, trainers, sometimes fellow travelers, sometimes Shamans,
Just like lifeguards, dealing with clients who swim willingly into the most perilous rip tides,
To reach counter parties intent on drowning not just themselves,
But anything they can touch....
Caveat emptor, and if you are not damned good at seeing to your own defense,
And simultaneously the defense of others intent on that destruction, their own, and anything they can burn down....

Don't dance with those demons, they already are in destruction, and those fires burn, and can catch.

I'll give you another one.

One of my black belts, hates me to this day,
For calling him out, for using the seminar circuit as a way to pick up females who attend the seminars he teaches.
We parted ways over that, and he is to this day, very, very bitter over it.
But, I think that behavior is wrong, and I have no better way to say it.

I have also known colleagues who have relations with their adult students, and even some that did so while married, with married students.

These situations, and people, cause huge problems, for the community.

In a State where most people are armed, one would hate for those parties to bring their beefs, to the school, or other mats.

Not to mention, all the criminals who ignore taps, or direct their enforcers too, for old school retributions for perceived insults.
That is very common, with some Brazilians, for example, and we had to break that mentality, here.
That was not easy, ironically, as people were cultishly brainwashed, to abandon their reason, as if any of that was OK, and not just criminal assault after mutual consent of play or combat had been withdrawn..
And, I would add, if you think about it, a kind of organized criminal behavior, no different than a criminal gang.

Beware any school or instructors that invokes the word "loyalty" frequently, that is a danger sign, and device all cults use.

So, as far as I can tell, all affiliations have to deal with these issues, eventually.

Even if it is not their direct people, but their entangled relationships in the community.

The ones that say they don't, are probably not being honest nor transparent about the scope and prevalence, of the problems.

And, how can we put processes in to mitigate these problems, if we do not honestly and transparently acknowledge they exist....

Even in our own networks, or communities.

Especially then, and there, in fact.

Here's another one, I have seen, happen from time to time.

You all ever see a local school offer heavy incentives on lifetime memberships,

And then just close shop...?

I have seen that one a few times, too.

Then we try to take in the ones harmed from that, and get them placed, and offer them discounts or a free year, or whatever,

Because the people that do those flim flams lower the waters for all our boats.
